Overview

Enhancing the aged user experience

The myRyman app introduces an innovative way for Ryman Healthcare's retirement village residents in New Zealand and Australia to connect with their community. Tailored for an audience with an average age of 80, this user-friendly app challenges the conventional views on aging. It ensures that accessing information like activity schedules and self-service options is straightforward, thereby encouraging a vibrant and connected village life.

Research

Our research was comprehensive, engaging with over 150 residents to understand their daily needs intimately. With more than 250 hours spent on interviews, co-design sessions, and user testing, we developed a deeply human-centered solution. This solution not only meets the users' needs but also builds confidence and ease of use through a constant cycle of feedback and iteration.

UX Design

The UX design of myRyman prioritizes accessibility and simplicity. By adhering to AAA visual accessibility standards and creating a 100% custom, evolving design system, we've ensured that the app is both easy to navigate and reduces cognitive load. This approach empowers all users, regardless of their technological proficiency, to manage their daily activities and engage with community events with minimal effort.

04

UI Design

myRyman's UI is a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics, standing as a beacon of accessible design that doesn’t compromise on style. Every design element, from the fonts to the navigation, is crafted to meet the highest accessibility standards, offering a seamless and inclusive user experience for users of all abilities.

05

Interactions

In designing the myRyman app, we intentionally limited interactions to taps and simple swipe gestures, mirroring the physical buttons and switches familiar to our aged demographic. This decision was informed by our research, which showed that more complex multi-finger or long-press and drag gestures were not well understood by this user group. This restriction presented unique challenges but ultimately led to creating a more accessible and user-friendly app. By focusing on simplicity, we ensure that residents can easily access and enjoy the full range of features, from booking activities to receiving event notifications, enhancing their daily lives with autonomy and ease.
